Historically shaping cultural discourse by documenting the region's significant artistic developments and movements. Metropolis [1]
Launched in 1968, Kultura is the leading scientific, peer-reviewed journal for the theory and sociology of culture in South-Eastern Europe. Holding the prestigious M51 national academic classification, it is the highest-level academic publication for cultural research in the region. Kultura [2] Zaprokul [3]
"On the occasion of the awarded work, in September 2008, Ćurić organized an exhibition of spatial comics at the Student Cultural Center in Belgrade, entitled "Service for the dynamics of space", where, in addition to the awarded work, he exhibited several other experiments based on a similar principle of structuring. In the presentation of this exhibition, S Vuković finds the value and innovation in Ćurić's work in abandoning the stereotypical relationship between comics and contemporary art, in (previously) established direct transfers from one area to another. In this change of approach to the medium, and in relation to previously awarded experiments, an important question was raised about the structure comics, in a way that had not been considered until then. Kultura [4]
Kultura [4]

She is internationally recognized for creating Invisible Wave, the first tactile comic book for the blind—which won seven prestigious awards for innovation. Dragana wrote a doctoral dissertation in which she highlights the importance of the Spatial Strip within the history of experimental comics in Yugoslavia. Ulupuds [5] Eteze [6]
At the fifth Belgrade International Comic Salon in 2007, the work of author Aleksander Ćurić was particularly notable – a spatial comic titled "Story of a Proud Man." Although there were previous authors (N. Pejić, M. Veselinović, S. Restecka, and Ž. Sanecka [S. Restecka, J. Sanecka - Polish comic authors, author's note], B. Milenković) with interesting reflections, their works were more focused on technical modifications but hardly or minimally considered or questioned the structure of the medium itself. Aleksander's work, described as an installation in the catalog, is much more than a spatial arrangement, primarily due to its narrative potential.
The three-dimensionality in this work applies to multiple levels – formal, structural, and semantic-ideational – and, in this regard, the work goes beyond the understanding of installation as such, as it does not pertain to spatial intervention that constitutes the content of the space itself, i.e., an intervention that alters the perception of space or gives it specific meanings. The catalog of the fifth Salon features a review by Z. Stefanović, who particularly notes that "the greatest breakthrough in alternative expression did not occur in two-dimensional form (which merely confirmed the already established styles), but in the expansion of comic art beyond the paper medium – into installation, spatial intervention, and sculptural dimensions." Eteze [6]
Founded in 1904, Politika is the oldest active daily newspaper in the Balkans. Beyond its role as a premier national news outlet, its dedicated culture section has served as an important authority for over a century, with its reviews widely considered a significant marker of artistic legitimacy in society. The review of the Spatial Strip was written by Stevan Vuković, one of the region’s most prominent art critics, curators, and theorists. His work has been essential in building the critical vocabulary needed to validate experimental and alternative media within mainstream national galleries and institutions. Politika [7] S. Vukovic [8] Britannica [17]
"The possibility that all of that can be different, that is, that the experience of making strip can be analytically applied to the production of works which question the limits of genre conventions in artistic and formal displays is shown by the Alexander’s exhibit known as the “SERVICE FOR SPATIAL DYNAMICS” (showcasing the spatial and alternative strip). Alexander releases this exhibit as the winner of the SCC (student cultural center, Belgrade) award for “innovation of the strip arts” at the annual 5th International strip Salon hosted by SCC in september 2007, and his exhibit was the introduction to this year’s strip salon in SCC. Even though this exhibition is observed, at first glance, as the serie of spatial installations, with physically very present elements, where some have an explicit sculptural qualities, combined together with text fragments which introduce some form of narration, which resembles, but barely just the strip narration, and by which are joined just but a few standard strip boards, hung on one wall, and it’s author insists that this is the “Exhibition of Spatial and alternative strip”

The Special Jury Award for Innovation
In 2007, at the 5th International Comics Salon, a multidisciplinary jury described it as the "biggest breakthrough in alternative expression". Festival granted Aleksander Ćurić the Special Jury Award for Innovation. Composed of the region's highest authorities, this panel recognized my work "Story of a Proud Man". For the jury, this award represented a paradigm shift, validating the Spatial Strip not as a mere experiment, but as a legitimate new medium that elevated the "Ninth Art" into the realm of fine art and sculptural installation. ‚‚The biggest breakthrough in alternative expression has not happened in two-dimensional form, but in expansion of graphic short stories media, out of paper - in installation, spatial intervention and sculptural dimension..."

Established in the 1970s, the SKC is historically recognized as the primary "incubator" for alternative and progressive culture in Yugoslavia. It was the epicenter of the Yugoslav "New Wave" (Novi Talas) in music and art. Its Srećna galerija (Happy Gallery) has served as the spiritual home for generations of significant artists and creators. Published by Srećna galerija, Skica is the official bulletin of the Belgrade International Comics Salon. Since the mid-2000s, it has served as a vital journal of record, documenting the intersection of graphic narrative, illustration, visual media and more, in the Balkans through detailed critical analysis. Skica [16]
Aleksander Ćurić is realizing this solo exhibition as the winner of the SKC Gallery Award for Innovation at the Fifth International Comics Salon in SKC in 2007. This exhibition presents a cycle of works, which stylistically derive from the experience of genre drawing in the manner of comics, but in their realization take the form of spatial installations. They show a kind of ambivalence, being both objective, directly present in the material sense and completely ethereal, as linear spatial drawings. Alexander lives and works in Ćuprija, where he is a member of the local art association Tatlin. He is involved in comics, writing, installations and electronic music.
A Belgrade-based cultural and news magazine, Singidunum Weekly frequently documented the city's alternative art scene. Its coverage of the 'Service for Spatial Dynamics' exhibition provided an early formal print mention of the 'Spatial Strip' as an emerging artistic medium, analyzing the work through the lens of spatial drawing and narrative repetition to bridge sequential storytelling with three-dimensional gallery space.
SERVICE FOR SPATIAL DYNAMICS
Spatial fiction/strip is the new artistic form which won the Special prize of the jury for innovation in strip for Alexander at the 5th International strip review in Belgrade. It is about the alternative strip, observed from the perspective of spatial drawing, made out of various materials ex. Steel, iron, plywood... The most drastic difference between such an installation and spatial drawing lies in the special approach to the story through the repetition of elements. Namely, a spatial strip shot consists of one drawing, and the whole of them make one board.

Launched in 2002 under the leadership of a highly respected Serbian painter, sculptor, and multimedia artist Slobodan Peladić, published annually by the Association of Fine Artists of Šabac (ULSŠ). Eon is a specialized print anthology tracking alternative, abstract, and underground graphic art. For the milestone 10th issue, Peladić personally selected my work to feature on the opening pages of the publication. Operating for over two decades with national curatorial relevance, the anthology bypasses commercial genres to document progressive visual practices across the post-Yugoslav art scene. S. Peladic [18] Bibliografija [19]
An independent small-press publisher and fanzine project dedicated to alternative, underground, and non-commercial sequential art across the Balkans. In 2015, the press published my standalone graphic narrative, Seed Unknown, as a exclusive print run limited to a rare 50 physical copies. The release was also distributed digitally across regional networks, receiving critical acclaim from the alternative cultural webzine Helly Cherry for its distinct poetic and visual execution. This independent project served as a vital underground node, documenting experimental and non-linear narratives within the post-Yugoslav art scene. Helly Cherry [20]
Launched in 2009 by the Center for Libertarian Activities, Aždaha was a Kragujevac-based alternative comic magazine that achieved nationwide newsstand distribution across Serbia. The publication focused entirely on avant-garde, non-commercial, and rebellious graphic narratives. Featuring my work consistently across its entire print run of issues 1 through 4, the magazine provides the most comprehensive printed coverage of my early drawing-based practice and experimental formats. Azdaha [21]
Established in 2003, Helly Cherry is one of the longest-running independent cultural webzines in the post-Yugoslav region, accumulating 23 years of continuous documentation of the underground arts scene as of 2026. Functioning as a vital digital archive, the platform tracks progressive movements across alternative music, literature, and visual practices. Over its two-decade history, the magazine has hosted and interviewed prominent regional icons, cult music figures, and international creators, solidifying its reputation as an authoritative tastemaker for counter-cultural art forms. Helly Cherry [22]
Critical Evaluation of "Seed Unknown"In March 2015, the platform published an extensive critical review of the standalone graphic narrative, Seed Unknown (published by Stripnjak Comics). The review provided immediate validation for the release, analyzing the project not merely as a sequential narrative, but as an existential and societal critique. The publication formally recognized the work as an artwork written with "brutal poetic passion" and filled with "nightmarish graphic illustrations" acting as a critique of modern society, as well as a total of five distinct features and visual showcases of my work.
Treći Svijet is a prominent independent regional portal dedicated to documenting contemporary alternative culture, underground music, and progressive visual arts across the post-Yugoslav landscape. Heavily endorsed by established counter-cultural icons and regional musicians for its commitment to non-commercial creators, the platform acts as a vital cross-border repository for multidisciplinary practices that push beyond mainstream industry conventions.
In October 2018, the regional cultural platform Treći Svijet published a comprehensive feature documenting the launch of my solo multimedia industrial/EBM project, CFKOIL. The article archives the foundational worldbuilding, narrative lore, and conceptual framework of the project—detailing a dystopian world under 'Enhanced Capitalism' through the perspective of the character Mark 7. The feature highlights how the sonic atmosphere integrates with my broader graphic poetry, short comic compilations, and experimental visual narratives. Treci Svijet [23]
